Steph: 50-40-90
As the prime years of Steph Curry’s career slowly tick away, I often get the creative urge to add a new installment in the series, as to artistically document in real time, a player who will be remembered as a transcendent force in league history. Composition-ally I tried to achieve something different, maybe even “modern” here, while still visually encapsulating Steph’s familiar flair that fans have grown to love.
This 20” x 27” inch pastel drawing had been baking in the ideas oven for months, with others, but I couldn’t quite get another concept to work out, so I thought I should just push ahead with this, and see what comes of it. With Steph’s return from a broken hand, and his birthday approaching, I saw it as good timing. Steph: 50-40-90 celebrates Curry’s remarkable all around shooting. As a member of the exclusive “50-40-90” % club, he is one of only 8 players in NBA history to achieve these percentages from the field, 3 pt range, and the free throw line, in a single season.
The biggest challenges (among others) with this piece were two fold. Super imposing the updated Warriors jersey logo template, using a collection of other photos and official Warriors logo templates, trying to create the believable size, colors and values. Secondly, incorporating 3 drawings of Steph (in each of the 50-40-90 shooting positions) into one, with interlocking places, in a delicate, dusty medium, where delicate and difficulty to maneuver became challenges. Overall, I feel like I got something new, and beyond typical by utilizing red, while still maintaining the centerpiece balanced style. I enjoy stretching the boundaries of previous single image works, and finding new ways to re-imagine such a specific template I’ve created for myself in the limited edition wearable art series. The second smaller word graphic piece I created for the backside panel of the wearable art tee shirt, the YaniMade innovation and staple. These shirts and fine art prints were a hit during their debut in Courtside Club VIP kiosks during the final 2018-2019 season at Oracle Arena. The artwork is professionally framed, featuring a floating mat and hand stained wood, revealing the paper’s edges, with non glare museum glass. * Note, the reflection is in the framed photo is caused by the phone camera, and not the actual room lighting.
